The end of 5 full days of water fasting.
In this video I discuss my overall impressions and experience of a 5 day water fast.
I’m surprised at how few side effects, reactions I had during the experience – compared to that of many other people i have watched and read about.
I report that my most interesting finding was the very obvious sense of calm that overcame me after day, continuing right through. This appears to be due to the effects of ketosis – which both is thought to reduce hunger, but also have a calming effect on the mind.
It was a highly positive experience. I wasn’t hungry even when sitting at the dinner table with the family while they were eating. So there is no need to isolate yourself. If you do feel hunger in the first 48 hours, it is most likely habitual, and can be allayed by a drink of water.
In retrospect, i would have probably added a pinch of salt to each of my drinks of water.
My sleep was normal and comfortable – i have heard reports that some people sleep restlessly during a fast.
I did experience delayed onset muscle soreness from a gym workout on day 3 – far in excess of the normal type of post exercise soreness and was an all pervasive body ache, rather than just workout pain. This was quite an unpleasant surprise and leads me to agree with proponents of fasting that recommend you abstain from strong physical exercise.
I have read that the time to break your fast is when you once again begin to feel hunger returning (after the first 48 hours). In my case it began with a craving for salt (which may have also been a need for electrolytes).
Do please make sure to pay attention to your cravings, especially after the first 48 hours. My method of breaking the fast was to take a bone broth (osso bucco and vegetables) over the course of the next 24 hours. The first meal was just broth. Some hours later I added some of the vegetables and marrow, and then some hours after that i also added some of the pulled beef from the broth.
The next 48 hours I ate very lightly, continuing the broth, but also having some slow cooked beef and chicken stew with vegetables.
In all I lost 4kg over 5 days, which was very interesting.
So there you have it. Please leave any of your own observations, experiences and suggestions below, for others that may be considering a water fast and thanks for watching! links to the Wim Hof site: https://www.wimhofmethod.com/
